The sidewalk in from of 107 and 109 South Main Street will be closed until March 1st for ongoing construction on The Woodward.

Harvest will remain open during this time.  
Construction will not affect our hours of operation or our ability to serve our customers.
 
Scrappy Cat Farms was established in 2010 the way most successful businesses begin, with a dream.  Even then their goals were lofty with a vision to enhance their community and grow food and make products which are nutritional and chemical free while using organic practices.

The name of the farm came from the stray cat which followed Chet and Vicky Blackburn home when they went walking the property lines and became a member of the family.

Beekeeping began as a hobby starting with 3 hives in 2012 and Scrappy Cat Farms is now the proud caretaker of 18 hives.

While they have had their ups and downs since beginning the farm, one thing remains true - their dedication to family and community and striving to make the world a better place.

Ultimate Homemade Mayonnaise
Yield: 3 1/2 cups

Ingredients
  • 2 large egg* yolks
  • ¾ c. canola oil (or extra virgin olive oil*, or sunflower oil*)
  • 1½ tbsp. white wine vinegar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. Freshly ground white pepper
Directions
  1. Place a medium bowl on a non-slip surface, such as a silicone baking sheet or a dish towel. In the bowl, whisk egg yolks until light and frothy. Slowly drizzle in 2 1/2 teaspoons oil, continuing to whisk until yolks become paler and thicken, about 40 seconds.
  2. If oil begins to pool rather than emulsify, stop drizzling and whisk yolks vigorously before adding any more oil. Then add remaining oil in a slow drizzle, continuing to whisk. Whisk in vinegar and salt. Add white pepper, if desired.
  3. Transfer mayonnaise to a clean container, cover with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Variations:
Fresh Herb: Fold in 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped parsley, 2 teaspoons chopped tarragon, and 1 teaspoon chopped thyme.
Caper-Dijon: Add 1/4 cup drained, chopped capers and 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard.
Horseradish: Stir in 1/4 cup fresh-grated (or drained prepared) horseradish, 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, 3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper.
Chili-Lime: Mix in 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice, 1 tablespoon lime zest, and 2 teaspoons each of honey and chili sauce.
Bacon-Chive: Combine with 3 finely chopped slices of cooked bacon and 1 1/2 tablespoons of chopped chives.

Street Closure Notice
We have been informed that South Main Street will be closed between Vine Street and Gambier Street intermittently to allow for needed construction of downtown businesses.  This street closure will not affect your ability to access Harvest.  Harvest will remain open during construction.  If you need assistance getting your groceries to your car, please call ahead and we can tell you the best time to come so that we can have someone available to help with those needs.  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
 
Food Facts:  Fascinating Quick Facts About Eggs
  1. Shell Color - Is based on the breed of chicken and interestingly enough can be determined by the color of their earlobes.  Brown shelled eggs have no more nutritional value than white shelled eggs.  There are even blue and green shelled chicken eggs!
  2. Yolk Color - Is determined by a hen's diet.  A dark yellow to orange yolk indicates a diet of plenty of greens, meaning the chicken was likely free ranging on pasture.  A medium yellow can indicate corn or alfalfa, meaning the chicken was likely "cage free" or commercially "free range" and supplemented with these grains.  While pale yellow yolks could be indicative of eating wheat and barley exclusively, meaning this chicken was likely either a battery cage chicken or a "cage free" chicken with no outdoor access.
  3. Shelf Life - Eggs come with a "Sell By" date, not an expiration date.  They are generally edible 3-4 weeks past this date.  There are ways to check if your eggs are past their prime or have gone bad.  The water test to see if the egg floats will tell you if the egg is getting old.  If you crack the egg and it smells, it's bad - throw it out.
  4. Demand - Americans eat an average of 250 eggs per year!  That's a lot of eggs!
  5. Cholesterol - Studies show that regular consumption of eggs doesn't increase your risk of heart disease.  So don't worry that your egg contains a higher amount of dietary cholesterol.
  6. Nutrition - Eggs are a nutrition powerhouse.  High in protein, healthy fats, one of the few forms of food based vitamin D and more.
  7. Cooking - A million and one ways to cook them!  Ok, I'm probably exaggerating there, but there are a LOT of ways to cook eggs and use eggs in other recipes.
  8. The BIG One - The largest chicken egg ever laid happened in 2010.  The poor hen laid an egg that was 9.1 inches in diameter!  Wow!

About Harvest At The Woodward
Harvest at The Woodward is located inside the historic Woodward Opera House.

About Clint, our store manager
Clint became the store manager of Harvest in 2013, taking over for Cheryl McKee.  He has 20+ years of retail experience, much of it in management.  In the past, he has worked for "big box" retailers to smaller convenience stores.  He has even worked a little bit of time at some restaurants.  His philosophy is always to put the customer's needs first and to treat everyone like family.  He lives on a small farm outside of Fredericktown with his wife of 20 years and his two kids.  Living on a small farm has allowed him to have experience with a variety of livestock, from various fowl to goats, llama, pig and steer.  He brings all of these areas of his background together in managing Harvest and bringing in vendors that supply the customers needs.

Emily LeVan writes and publishes Harvest At The Woodward's weekly e-newsletter and has done so since early 2013.  She is a strong supporter of the store in many ways - she volunteers often in the store, she is one of our vendors operating under the name, Honaker Farm, and she is constantly sending vendors Clint's way.  All vendor bios are edited or written by her, and Food Facts articles are written by her.  She searches the web to find a recipe each week that ties in with what the newsletter is talking about or what's going on that week.
